چکیده

The three-state Potts model with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor (n.n.) and ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor (n.n.n) interaction is investigated within a mean-field theory. We find that the phase-diagram contains two kind of ordered phases, so-called BSS phase and PSS phase, separated by a discontinuous phase transition line. Order-disorder transition is continuous for the weak n.n.n. interaction and becomes discontinuous transition when the n.n.n. interaction is increased. We show that the multicritical point where the order-disorder transition becomes discontinuous is indeed a tricritical point. PACS numbers: 64.40.Kw, 75.10.Hk Typeset using REVTEX 1

Level spectroscopy of the square-lattice three-state Potts model with a ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling.

We study the square-lattice three-state Potts model with the ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling at finite temperature. Using the level-spectroscopy method, we numerically analyze the excitation spectrum of the transfer matrices and precisely determine the global phase diagram. Then we find that, contrary to a previous result based on the finite-size scaling, the massless region contin...

Nonuniform phases in metals with local moments

The two-dimensional Kondo lattice model with both nearest and next-nearest neighbor exchange interactions is studied within a mean-field approach and its phase diagram is determined. In particular, we allow for lattice translation symmetry breaking. We observe that the usual uniform intersite order parameter is never realized, being unstable towards other more complex types of order. When the n...

EFFECT OF THE NEXT-NEAREST NEIGHBOR INTERACTION ON THE ORDER-DISORDER PHASE TRANSITION

In this work, one and two-dimensional lattices are studied theoretically by a statistical mechanical approach. The nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions are both taken into account, and the approximate thermodynamic properties of the lattices are calculated. The results of our calculations show that: (1) even though the next-nearest neighbor interaction may have an insignificant ef...

Mean-field driven first-order phase transitions in systems with long-range interactions

We consider a class of spin systems on Z with vector valued spins (Sx) that interact via the pair-potentials Jx,y Sx ·Sy . The interactions are generally spreadout in the sense that the Jx,y’s exhibit either exponential or power-law fall-off. Under the technical condition of reflection positivity and for sufficiently spread out interactions, we prove that the model exhibits a first-order phase ...

Three-state Potts model on a triangular lattice.

We study the phase diagram of the three-state Potts model on a triangular lattice with general interactions (ferro/antiferromagnetic) between nearest neighbor spins. When the interactions along two lattice-vector directions are antiferromagnetic and infinitely strong, this model becomes equivalent to a six-vertex model and exhibits a first-order (KDP) transition from an ordered phase into a cri...
